San Leonardo is called ''THE SASSICAIA OF THE NORTH'' :- An elegant, subtly powerful wine offering classic poise, beautiful breeding, and both approachability and reserve. It’s a virtual unknown, one of the best Carbernet-based wine in Italy.

The owner and winemaker of San Leonaardo, Marchese Carlo Guerrieri Gonzaga, is nephew and ‘student’ of Sassicaia’s Mario Incisa Della Rocchetta. He was a consultant oenologist for Marchese Mario Incisa back in the 1960s.

Seen as the Sassicaia of the North, this Estate's outstanding Bordeaux blend has received 'Tre Bicchiere' (3 glasses) from Gambero Rosso in consistently every vintage over the past 12 years and was also numbered among the Guide's 'Fifty Wines which changed Italy'. The wine is more akin to Bordeaux than Bolgheri with its balance and purity. The Estate is consistently voted the top winery in the region and one of the nine most consistent in the whole of Italy, AND YET its wines remain extremely well-priced in comparison to more widely publicised names.

The blend has remained the same since the debut vintage in 1982, and is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Cabernet Franc and 10% Merlot, selected from the best barrique and only made in the finest vintages.
